codes +

I found this exercise with codes, ergonomics, and proxemics to be very helpful. As an aspiring designer, knowledge of my subject is key. There few areas of design that do not have the human body as the user of whatever product/space that is being designed. With that in mind, the deeper the understanding the human body (in all ages and varying abilities), the better the design possibilities. A really basic understanding of standards helps me to start to lay out a space and to place things in a roughly usable way. I can see that a greater knowledge of codes will help me to really focus on each part of a space and improve my designs. Codes and standards also help me to look beyond my own body and consider how others move through the world and what their needs are. Proxemics is especially important in public spaces where large numbers of people, many of them strangers, are present in small areas. The proxemics on a relief bus after a disaster seem especially important because people may be feeling less secure and personal space could be more important.
