Triangle Modernist Houses recently posted a note about a Lustron home in Nasheville, NC that was for sale and facing demolition so that the land it was on could be used as a parking lot. It mentioned that Lustron's were a prefab home produced in the 50's made of steel and porcelain coated steel. This made me curious...and so I looked into it! They were produced in response to a housing shortage after WWII and were built to be to be maintenance free and affordable (around $7,000.00).

The home sold (to someone in Greensboro!) and I have since found that there are a handful of Lustrons still scattered around NC.

I have been researching design that uses ephemeral materials. This can include, biodegradable, temporary, edible, and unusual materials. Material choice cannot help but inform the meaning of a final product or project. I am interested in the ways that these materials can evoke memory and how their temporary and changing properties can serve as momento mori (reminder of death). By default or on purpose these materials are exceptionally sustainable.

After speaking with Mike Cindric of Design Dimensions, I finally forced myself to take time to visit the newish Museum Park, an outdoor trail and sculpture park at the North Carolina Museum of Art. It's something that I had been wanting to do for way too long. It was just embarrassing to live in Raleigh and not have been there. So I went & it was beautiful!

I was fortunate enough to have my mock interview with Mike Cindric, Project Manager at Design Dimensions. I was not previously familiar with Design Dimensions. I found out that they do custom fabrication, exhibit design, and all sorts of other special projects (like the enclosure for Watson, the computer on Jeopardy). I was excited to hear about their focus on fabrication because physically making things is important to me and is something that I hope to incorporate into my career. Mr. Cindric spoke to me about his background in art and sculpture and how it had led him to become involved with Design Dimensions through a search for studio space. I shared my background in art, also sculpture, that included my time as a student at UNC Chapel Hill where Mr. Cindric had taught art. I also found out that Mr. Cindric had partnered with Vinny Petrarca of Tonic Design on the Lowes Pavilion at the North Carolina Museum of Art. I am a fan of Tonic's work and was especially intrigued with this collaboration. I had seen the pavilion online and this meeting only increased my desire to see it in person.

The Hatchery: what is it?

The Hatchery is a place where UNCG students (and possibly faculty and alumni) can develope ideas, create, perform, and sell their works. It will include spaces for studios, music/dance/theater/fashion/art performances, gallery or exhibition space, client meeting space, and retail.

My Concept

I have been thinking about the processes of idea development that will be taking place in the Hatchery from the formation and development of ideas to the presentation of completed projects. An important part of those processes is the collaboration that can occur in this space.

I have also been thinking about Greensboro's history and how it relates to this project and the processes that will be taking place at the Hatchery.

This led me to look at Greensboro's history of textile maufacturing; specifically the Proximity and Cone Mills involved with denim manufacturing. I began to think about the process of weaving where a raw material is spun into yarn and then many, many strands of yarn are woven together on a loom to create a piece of fabric that is larger than the individual yarns but is dependant on them. The way in which the yarn is placed on the loom and the order in which it is combined dictates the pattern or weave that will be produced. I see the process of creating fabric to be like the creative processes that will happen at the Hatchery. Rough ideas will be refined and individuals will come together to form larger ideas and create projects that are possible only through the combined effort of several minds. The idea of weaving is also appropriate in regards to the physical location of the Hatchery. It will not be located within the UNCG campus but will be within the larger Greensboro community, possibly downtown. It will be a way for UNCG to become one of the many smaller businesses and organizations that together make up the larger "fabric" of Greensboro's business and arts communities.

The kitchen, shop, and exterior are united by one piece of porphyry stone that leads from the baking oven to the exterior of the shop where water trickles out of a slit onto the street. Inside the shop the stone functions as the counter. The oven is visible from within the store through a cut out in the wall.

The floors, columns, and stairs are in the same polished porphyry.

The bread bins and walls are clad in custom oxidized brass as are the walls of the stairwell.

The kitchen faces the street and is separated from it by a glass window where passersby can watch the bakers at work. The staff and bakers are outfitted in white Armani designed uniforms.

The lighting is recessed into the ceiling and into the wall by the stairwell.

The materials are purposefully limited to brass, stone, fire, water, & wood to leave the focus on bread, the process of the bread making, and the smells of baking. The materials are basic and elemental as bread itself is yet they are tactile and sensual as is the experience of baking, smelling and eating bread.

The storefront is all glass exposing the bright white and yellow interior of the store.

The color palate of the store is primarily limited to these colors. The display pedestals and store fixtures are all in glossy white and yellow keeping the overall look clean, organized, bright, and toy-like. The left portion of the window is dressed with rows of clear cylindrical displays that showcase one lego block each. The cylinders echo the cylinders on a lego. The effect is sophisticated yet bright and appealing to children. Many of the displays and counters within the store are at childrens' eye level and within a child's reach.

The interior of the store features a large rectangular box-like ceiling drop in bright yellow. Inside the box are white cylindrical drum suspension lights. This ceiling feature echos the form of a lego block. Beneath the ceiling box the floor is also bright glossy yellow with a gray pathway around its parameter. The product is located along this gray path on the walls while the yellow interior space is for interactive play/build stations. The salespeople wear black shirts and yellow aprons.

Located in the center of the store, within the yellow floor, are display fixtures, the sales counter, and building stations with bins of legos that children can use to build with in the store. These stations also look as though they are made of large glossy yellow legos.

The back wall is clad in glossy white plastic segments with clear cylindrical bins that contain bulk lego blocks organised by color. Here again, the form of the lego has been repeated. Even the plastic tubs that the bulk legos are sold in have a circular pattern on their sides and can fit together like legos if multiples are purchased.

The store is located near mall entrance and has one "exterior" wall. This wall is again clad in bright yellow plastic tiles that look like legos.

The bags are in the same glossy yellow.

This store is very sucessful in taking the look and feel of the product and extending it in material and form to the entire store.

wooden trim and lots of glass expose the modern globe suspensions lights, large central chandelier, and simple white Saarinen table.

The impression is clean and minimal mixed with ornate and luxurious elements.

The door signage is black, simple, and clean.

The cash wrap is an antique dark wood table. The storage behind and display to the side are minimal and white. The packaging and displays are sparse and museum-like. A limited color palate is used throughout the store: white and black with pale blue, gold, and pink accents.

The small accessory bags reflect the colors and minimal luxury of the rest of the store. They are arranged neatly on a shelf and are a display element.

Clothing racks are suspended from the ceiling with chains that are covered in white fabric sleeves similar to what is sometimes used to conceal and dress up chain and wire on chandeliers. This type of fixturing allows the clothing to be easily seen and it provides a luxurious touch. The only signage is small cards in pink, black, & white.

The high ceilings and ornate accents that you might find in a fine home add a touch of exclusivity.

The back wall of the store houses a large wooden fixture and antique jewelry case that act as a focal point.

The ceiling appears to be white painted tin with an embossed pattern.

Rich finishes mixed with minimal white walls and fixtures create a feeling of exclusivity and taste while allowing the product to shine.

case study: Cupcake Shoppe, Raleigh

pink, brown, gray, and black are used on the exterior and interior of the shop as well as in the signage and packaging. The window displays repeat these colors.
The logo is used on the packaging and store signage.

The interior has traditional elements and details: molding, antique register, and antique counter, that are painted in pale pink and gray or clad in white on white floral wallpaper. These details seem to delight in a degree of frillieness and playfulness that is associated with a cupcake.

The frilly elements of the shop are balanced with simple modern chairs, cafe tables, and lighting.

This small shop has succeeded in creating a strong brand identity through use of color, strong logo, and matching packaging. They have also managed to keep the cupcake playful and frilly while also making it polished and precious.

The logo is present on the store signage, door, packaging, and business card. The font is simple and easy to read while having a unique style. Japanese lettering is in the bottom right corner. The term shibui is a Japanese term that is used to describe a complex yet understated type of beauty that often involves history or maturity.

The store is organized with clean-lined maple tables running down the center of the space and maple shelving units on either side. Bars are placed between some of the shelves to create clothing racks. The clean lines, light colored wood, and low fixtures in the center of the space create a feeling of spaciousness despite the small size of the shop.

Track lighting illuminates the products on the shelves, small white glass pendants direct you to the register area and jewelry case, and larger paper Nelson Bubble lamps create an ambient glow in the space and draw your attention to the tables. The Bubble lamps are particularly appropriate because they are made of paper and Japanese papers are a specialty of the shop. The space is well lit without being too bright or glaring.

The materials used in the interior finishing, brick & white walls, maple fixtures, wooden ceiling, and paper lamps, create a minimal but slightly Japanese feel without being kitschy or overdone. The brown paper packaging is in keeping with the feel of the shop.

In the back of the shop custom made maple wall racks hold and display a selection of Japanese papers and art is shown on the white walls.

Workshops are held on the tables in this back area. The tables are counter height in order to be able to be used for both display and workshops.

Paper is also stored in flat files in the back area.

The ceiling has been finished with wooden beams which adds a Japanese touch and gives the store distinct character. You do not feel like you are in a shopping center when you are in this space.

I feel like the ceiling is a very important element to transform in shopping center spaces. Acoustic ceiling tiles have ruined the look of too many stores!

The light neutral floor adds to the sense of space.

Generations X and Y

In my research I found that both Generation X and Y are highly educated and have grown up with technology. While Generation X experienced the widespread use of the home computers and video games, Generation Y has grown up with cell phones, instant messaging, I-Pods, and facebook.

In my personal experience, entertaining and socializing are important to people in these age groups (including myself). Open floor plans that encourage ease of movement between living and eating spaces with access to music, and even the outdoors, are popular and conducive to social gatherings.

The unit that I designed offers a very open floor plan that is one open room with a loft. The bathroom is the only completely separated space aside from the rooftop patio. I wanted to create an experience that brought the sensations of a bath or outdoor swimming space to an accessible environment. I used sunlight, the sound of water moving, and forms that evoke natural bathing places to do this.

From the entrance of the bath, the first hallway to your right leads you to changing rooms.
After changing, you may enter the main pool area. First on your left is a screened area for washing. From there you may enter the indoor bath on your right or the sauna on your left. Beyond the sauna is the outdoor bath.

The pools are able to accommodate bathers in wheelchairs or on provided floats. If a float is used, it is taken into the bath in the wheelchair. When the water level is high enough to float, the wheelchair can be placed in a designated area of the pool where it can be easily accessed for exiting.

The floor and walls are made of concrete painted white.
Cylindrical vertical elements in pressure treated maple act as railing and provide privacy in sections of the pools.

The upper portions of the side walls are also cylindrical maple posts. There is a one foot opening between the walls and the ceiling for more light and air circulation.

The roof is maple and glass. There is no wall separating the indoor and outdoor pools. This space is open, letting in sunlight and breeze.

The water level in the baths is flush with the surrounding walkways. Grey river pebbles create a visual boarder as well as a texture that stops straying wheels. The pebbles are placed in a recess around the pools. They cover a drain system that keeps water levels even with the edge and that circulates with the washing area.

In the washing area water is pumped up through the vertical elements and either flows out on top or from wooden spouts by the seats. This water is reabsorbed in drains at the base of the vertical elements to be cleaned and used again.

I began with stone shapes similar to the shapes that I used in "a place to dine", Japanese Onsen baths, and childhood memories of swimming in the mountains of Tennessee. With wheelchair accessibility added, I began to sketch out topographical map-like forms.

The dining space is surrounded on three sides by large repeating windows that open onto the surrounding woods. The room is at the edge of the home and is accessed by two openings in one corner. It is open to the kitchen and living room but is not a passage way. It is a destination.
The color palette is subdued and consists of only white, grey, and brown. There is minimal use of materials; plaster, wood, felt, corian, stone, and synthetic paper. This restrained use of color and material draws attention to the details and subtle texture in the space; the slick maple and corian, the soft unevenness of the plaster walls, the dense and barely fuzzy felt, the honeycombed paper stools. As diners enter and become aware of these details, their mindsets are transformed. They become more focused on their senses, the food that they are sharing, and hopefully, the people with whom they are dining.
Transformation is expressed within the architectural details and furnishing features of the space. Trees in the surrounding woods are major visual elements due to the many windows. Outside are living trees, the corner support is a roughly carved trunk, and the floors, shelves, recessed ceiling, and bent wood chairs are polished maple strips. River stones boarder the floor, the table shape is evocative of a chiseled stone, and the recessed ceiling shape is faceted like a polished gem stone. In both cases the transformation exposes the interior of the material as diners move towards the center of the room. The synthetic paper stools unfold from book-like objects into round stools held together by magnets. They can be also be attached to one another to transform into longer benches.

As I read "Computing in Architectural Design", I was struck by the rapid change that has taken place in computer software that aids architecture and the change that has taken place in the actual role of the computer. Clearly computers have made the drafting process much faster, more efficient, and more precise. In regards to rendering, computers have enabled drawings to be more precise and to contain more information than drawings done by hand. Computer generated renderings can also be very beautiful, although I think that drawings that are a mixture of hand and computer based drawing techniques can be the most successful at offering beauty and precision. For me, the most fascinating point is the discussion of how the role of the computer is changing in architecture and design. Where the computer was once a tool used to express an architects vision it is now beginning to be used to actually shape and create that vision. It is exciting to think about new ways to create shapes, forms, and patterns that exist only through/because of computers.

Rookwood Vase in Modern Home (building)

I am so happy with my new home! My husband and I recently moved from Connecticut to North Carolina where we have just finished our dream home. We share a love of art and modern architecture and design that we expressed through our new, post children in the house, home. In Connecticut, we were lucky enough to have examples of work from great modern architects like Eero Saarinen, Philip Johnson, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Richard Meier near by. When we came to a point where we were thinking seriously about what we wanted to do and how we wanted to live with our future retirement in mind, we wanted to move somewhere that also valued modern architecture. As a curator, I have been interested in North Carolina's history with involving the Black Mountain College and North Carolina's strong craft and pottery traditions. I have a small personal collection of pottery and ceramics that spans from Rookwood to Mark Hewitt. As avid Dwell Magazine readers, my husband and I followed the two Dwell prefab homes that were built in North Carolina and noticed some interesting articles on North Carolina architectural firms like Tonic Design and Frank Harmon (worked with Richard Meier; one of my favorites!). As we researched North Carolina further, we found that some areas were highly ranked as places to live that offered modern amenities while also offering a low cost of living. The more we learned, the more central North Carolina looked like an ideal place for us to move where we would be able to afford to build the modern home that we have always wanted while still enjoying some of the benefits of city life and university communities. That was the path that we followed and now our home has been completed. We love the way that we can display our art and pottery collections in the house's simple, clean rooms and the way that the large windows and natural materials bring the beautiful surrounding woods indoors. Our architect did a great job of incorporating local materials, something that we appreciated in Frank Harmon and Edward Lowenstein's local architecture. I am thrilled to be able to enjoy modern architecture that provides a beautiful but unobtrusive backdrop for my art and pottery collection in an area that values these interests.

The Barcelona Daybed by Mies Van Der Rohe would work well in this home. Its clean modern lines and status as a collectible piece designed by an important modern architect make it physically compatible, appealing to clients who are collectors like the home owners above, and appropriate for a modern building. The Barcelona Daybed is often seen in leather, mixing a natural material with an industrial one similar to the way this home combines industrial materials and methods with natural materials.

An artifact like the Tiki Lamp is less appropriate for this type of a space. It is associated with highly themed and elaborately decorated interiors and a 1950's feel as well as a less serious and less expensive type of space.

Glenwood Community Garden at Steelman Park

As I think about design that is both sustainable and that builds community, a community garden is a perfect fit. Glenwood Community Garden at Steelman Park is Greensboro's first community garden. It was started in 2007. It is funded by a grant from North Carolina's Eat Smart Move More Community Grants program secured by the Reach for Health Unit of Guilford County's Department of Public Health. Partners in the project include the Glenwood Neighborhood Association, North Carolina Cooperative Extension - Guilford County, Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department, Greensboro Water Resource Department, and Grace Community Church. The garden is comprised of 30, 20' x 4' raised bed plots that are rented and maintained by residents of the neighborhood. This site was chosen because it is in a historic neighborhood that was becoming run down, contained a high rate of rental properties, and contained Steelman Park that was viewed as unsafe by community members due to drug and alcohol use that took place there (http://acga.localharvest.org/garden/M1813). Glenwood Community Garden aims to make the park safer and more utilized by the community, beautify the neighborhood, promote community through social interaction, increase physical activity and fruit & vegetable intake, provide a sense of self confidence and self reliance, and reduce food cost for participants. The garden benefits the larger Greensboro community by giving 10% of the food produced to the Servant House that feeds local hungry families. In August 2008, the Greater Glenwood Neighborhood Association won the Greensboro Beautiful Annual Award for Neighborhood Service as a result of several projects including this community garden. I visited the garden and saw that most of the plots are planted and growing and there are flowers and vines surrounding the fenced in garden area. There is a playground area nearby where children were playing. These signs indicate to me that the garden has been successful in involving the community and returning the park to children. This garden, and community gardens like it, have great potential to build community, affect health, and improve quality of life, things that good design should always aim to do.

Rookwood Vase in a space

The Rookwood vase by Rookwood Pottery (designer Lawrence) is shown here in an imagined contemporary residential space. The architectural style of this home is modern with emphasis placed on clean, geometric forms, open spaces, and large windows that being the outside in. The interior furnishings and decorative objects are minimal but carefully selected. It could be inferred that this is the home of someone with considerable economic means and a knowledge and appreciation of the history of modernism. Homes with strong modern features like this are often custom designs that are more expensive than the typical middle class house. The collection of furniture and artifacts ranges in time frame of design but shares a connection to modernism and general design significance. The sofa is a Stickley sofa, an important designer and manufacturer of the American Arts and Crafts movement. The chairs are Le Corbusier LC1 or Basculant chairs, designed in 1928 and currently produced by Cassina. Le Corbusier was a significant architect and designer of the early modernism movement. The vessel that shares the hearth with the Rookwood vase is Canoa, designed by Ludovico Diaz de Santillana and Tobia Scarpa and manufactured by Venini. Venini is an Italian company from the glass blowing island of Murano. It is significant to modernism and similar to Rookwood pottery because of the use of simple modern forms and the practice of inviting designers, architects, and artists from outside the company to produce designs for them. On the wall hang two felt pieces, called Yard, by Italian rug and furniture manufacturer Paola Lenti. The Stickley sofa, Rookwood vase, Venini glass vessel, and Paola Lenti hangings are all pieces that are hand made. The Corbusier chairs are machine made but are born out of a similar focus on being well made. Everything within the space as well as the space itself embody ideas first born out of the Arts and Crafts movement and then continued in modernism such as clean geometric forms, quality of construction, and blurring of the lines between inside and out.

After a disaster, relief workers and volunteers are rushed to the disaster site from various locations to offer their assistance. They leave their homes and families to enter unfamiliar and inhospitable situations that demand selflessness and emotional strength. They come to offer support and comfort to others without expecting to get the same in return. After a physically or emotionally difficult day, a simple hug can be invaluable. Disaster relief workers are often far from their family and friends and may not have access to their own network of support. This shelter bus embraces the workers staying in it. At the end of a difficult day it helps them to be calmed and renewed before the next grueling day begins. A soft, neutral color palate and rounded room edges and corners envelope the workers as soon as they enter. Pop-out dining and bed areas and circular shower and bath stalls create small, intimate spaces that wrap and enfold the users. The chairs and sofa in the living and dining areas are bowl-like upholstered pieces that cradle the body as a mother's lap or loved one's arms might. The forms and decoration within the bus are simple and minimal in order to contribute to a feeling of calm. Well-organized storage spaces throughout the bus hold clothing, food, and bath items in a user-friendly way that makes daily tasks stress free. Multiple shower stalls make morning traffic flow more smoothly and private sleeping areas offer valuable time alone. This shelter bus physically holds and cradles the workers in a physically comforting way while its features function to reduce stress and create a mental feeling of calm and comfort in these guest’s otherwise very stressful days.
